PSL Criticism: Are Franchise Owners in a Dispute?

The recent criticism from Multan Sultans’ owner Ali Tareen has sparked a chain of reactions in the world of Pakistan Super League (PSL). After Tareen's comments, another franchise owner, Salman Iqbal of Karachi Kings, stepped in to share his thoughts on the matter.

In a public response, Salman Iqbal asked fellow franchise owners to avoid tarnishing the league's reputation. He pointed out that all franchise owners are part of the PSL family, and it’s important to keep the league's image intact.

PSL Is Our Pride

Salman Iqbal emphasized that from the very beginning, the league has faced criticism from various quarters, including from India and some international TV channels. However, he expressed how painful it was for him to see a fellow franchise owner, like Ali Tareen, publicly mocking and disrespecting the league.

He said, “PSL has been growing stronger every year, and it’s a source of immense pride for all of us. The efforts by Salman Nasir and the PCB team to elevate the league to new heights are commendable. Instead of criticizing, we, as franchise owners, should support them and celebrate the league’s success.”

The Rental Model Controversy

A couple of days ago, Ali Tareen had voiced his concerns about PSL's franchise rental model. According to him, the league’s franchise system does not allow real ownership. He explained that franchise owners like himself are required to pay a fee (rent) annually to maintain their team’s franchise rights. If they fail to pay, they risk losing their ownership rights altogether.

ملتان سلطانز کے مالک علی ترین کی طرف سے پاکستان سپر لیگ (پی ایس ایل) پر کی گئی تنقید کے بعد ایک اور فرنچائز مالک نے اپنی رائے کا اظہار کیا۔ کراچی کنگز کے مالک سلمان اقبال نے علی ترین کی تنقید پر ردعمل دیتے ہوئے کہا کہ لیگ کی ساکھ کو نقصان پہنچانے سے گریز کیا جائے، کیونکہ ہم سب فرنچائز مالکان پی ایس ایل کا حصہ ہیں۔

پی ایس ایل ہمارا فخر ہے

سلمان اقبال نے مزید کہا کہ پی ایس ایل کا آغاز ہی سے کئی مشکلات کا سامنا رہا ہے، بشمول بھارت اور دیگر ٹی وی چینلز کی جانب سے تنقید۔ تاہم، ان کے مطابق سب سے زیادہ دکھ تب ہوتا ہے جب ہمارا ہی ایک ساتھی، یعنی ٹیم کا مالک، لیگ کا مذاق اُڑاتا اور توہین کرتا ہے۔

انہوں نے کہا، "پی ایس ایل ہر سال ترقی کر رہا ہے اور یہ ہم سب کا فخر ہے۔ سلمان نصیر اور پی سی بی کی ٹیم لیگ کو نئی بلندیوں تک پہنچانے کے لیے اپنی بھرپور کوششیں کر رہی ہے۔ ہمیں منفی باتوں کے بجائے ان کی حمایت کرنی چاہیے۔"

رینٹل ماڈل پر تنقید

چند دن پہلے، علی ترین نے پی ایس ایل کے فرنچائز رینٹل ماڈل پر شدید تنقید کی تھی۔ ان کے مطابق، پی ایس ایل کی تمام فرنچائزز میں حقیقی ملکیت نہیں ہے، بلکہ فرنچائز مالکان ہر سال ایک کرایہ (رینٹ) ادا کرتے ہیں تاکہ اپنے ٹیموں کی ملکیت برقرار رکھ سکیں۔ اگر یہ کرایہ ادا نہ کیا جائے تو مالکانہ حقوق ختم ہو سکتے ہیں۔
